Highway 97 Wickiup Junction Overpass project to be scrapped
A large underground lake bed with very soft soils has caused the Oregon Department of Transportation to put a halt to the Highway 97 Wickiup Junction Overpass project. The project to put the highway over the BNSF train tracks was halted in May, when settling occurred. The soil settled anywhere from 6-18 inches. A 3rd party engineering firm was brought in and they discovered the ancient lake drilling some 280 feet deep. The added weight from the Dirt brought in for the overpass was enough to start the settling process. The over pass will be removed and ODOT will now look at other options for the over pass. About 12 million of the 17 million dollars allocated for the project was spent.
